This study tested Exhale in a fully furnished simulated bedroom with an established population of approximately 100 bed bugs. Two infrared time-lapse cameras recorded activity over eight-hour periods each night. On the control night, with no Exhale running, only a single bed bug left its harborage across the entire night. On every night Exhale was active, substantial foraging activity was recorded - bed bugs left their harborage sites and moved through the room regardless of which position the device was placed in. Peak activity was recorded when Exhale was positioned on the bed facing the head end. The study concludes that Exhale is effective at triggering bed bug foraging behaviour in realistic conditions, and is particularly well suited for use alongside a heat source or residual treatment to maximise capture and contact rates.

This study used six replicated controlled trials, each with 20 marked adult male bed bugs held in standardised arenas. Bed bugs were kept without a blood meal for approximately 14 days prior to testing to ensure hunger levels were consistent. Activity was measured by counting the number of bed bugs outside their harborage during the dark phase. In the treatment group, a substantial increase in activity was recorded during the second dark phase when Exhale was running, compared to the first dark phase without it. No comparable increase was observed in the control group where Exhale was not used. The study concludes that Exhale produces a consistent and measurable increase in bed bug activity across all six replicates.
